My work investigates the vessel as a primary conduit for cultural transmission, specifically exploring the visual lexicon of Italian heritage. By deconstructing the traditional silhouette of the amphora, I challenge the permanence of historical narratives. This piece utilizes iconic motifs, the grotesque, the heraldic griffin, and the checkerboard “scacchi” not as static decoration, but as a fluid language of migration. Historically, ceramics functioned as nomadic storytellers, carrying myths across borders. I mirror this movement by fracturing the ceramic body, allowing imagery to bleed across shifting planes and textures. The tension between delicate white glaze and raw, terracotta-toned sgraffito evokes an unspooled archaeological memory. This piece was realized during a residency at the International Center for the Arts in collaboration with Studio Goretti and Studio Nulli. While I constructed the form and executed the sgraffito layout, the majolica motifs were painted by the artisans of these studios, incorporating generations of tactile knowledge into the work. Through this synthesis of classical iconography and structural distortion, I represent culture not as a fixed relic, but as a living assemblage, questioning how ancient forms continue to transform our collective identity.
